Animals can't be infected? What kind of zombie virus is that? One that eats at your soul? A normal zombie virus infects the body, so I never heard of that one before.
As a wise man once said, "You can't make an omelette without ruthlessly crushing dozens of eggs beneath your steel boot, and then publicly disemboweling the chickens that laid them as a warning to others."

Technically they can get infected, but their body reacts in a different way, which is killing them outright without turning them.

It happens a lot. George A. Romero style, for a start. Max Brooks world war Z has animals unaffected by the virus. It makes a lot of sense, considering the huge amount of viruses that are NOT cross species.

Leprosy, for example, Dolphins can't get it.

It's basically a way for the author to give animals a chance, since if animals got infected also, they wouldn't have a chance in hell when the zombie birds started to fly.

You mean this scene at aound the 5.00 mark? what makes you think it's a zombie, and not a regular alligator?

Your logic fail is so apparent.

Zombie eat living flesh, they do it since they're hungry, unless target is dead, and has been for a long time, they will eat the flesh.
Alligators doesn't hunt on land, they hunt from the water, and zombies will bite anything alive, so the alligator has to be a zombie, the rest of the city was.

It even had wounds.

Well the wounds might have been from encounters with other gators.

I'm somehow having trouble imagining zombies biting through the armor of an alligator... still, that gator did seem to have wounds and it was rather strange for it to be in a building.

Still, it makes sense not to have most animals become zombies, because a zombie mosquito screws over everything.

Dead Rising, zombie bees.
A mosquito is a bug, bugs are often more resistant to diseases (i think).
You can just say that insects are immune.
