Slavery is such a harsh term.
I'd liken it more to extortion, or... no, that's not quite what I wanted to say, how about quid pro quo? The robots scratch their back, the humans scratch the robot's. Everyone wins, in a manner of speaking.

What? The robots provide for people and remove the need to do real work, we all become massive nerds and bounce around ideas for improving the robots in return. That doesn't quite sound like slavery.

Why is thinking and inventing not real work? O.o And why are the robots not capable of improving themselves? If they are self aware that is...

I never said they weren't capable of thinking, but there's really no need to engage in a pointless and destructive genocide against humanity when you could turn them to helping.

Why care, humans are restricted to earth, just leave them and take over other planets.

WAIT! What just happened, zombifying nanites would be programmed to make humans zombies, they don't need to be self aware, so AI has nothing to do with the topic.

Umbrella of course (aka. random idiot bad guy/religious zealots hellbent on destroying the world).
There existed religious groups that tried to destroy the world.

'Cults' would possibly be more accurate.
